Problem

How do you help crypto traders correctly assess risk in choosing tokens to invest in? Before the collapse of LUNA, even some experts would have advised to simply go with popular projects, but that has turned out to not be a safe bet.

Many traders go with community recommendations, often leaving the research to self-proclaimed crypto experts who recommend projects after endorsement deals. Moreover, how do you help traders discover new and exciting but safe tokens they might be interested in. How do you educate crypto newbies while eliminating industry jargon?

These and more where the problems we set out to solve as we worked on the Rain project across 3 phases and over 16 sprints.

My Role

Working as a Product Designer, I collaborated from other designers and producers distributed around the world. Among others, Rosie and Matt did the brand work and Chris (London), Bonga (Johannesburg), Brice (Normadic, London) and Chaittanya (Bangalore) where the designers that worked with me on this project.

I worked extensively on token discovery, the search experience, crypto education, the coin detail pages and a bulk of the transaction pages among other things.

Goal

We set out to create a crypto trading experience that is brand-rich and educates users while giving them what they need to mitigate risk and make token trading decisions.

User Research

Research methods: User interviews, Surveys

We conducted 3 rounds of user interviews, 1 pre design and during exploration, 1 during the design phase and 1 more on usability testing of the designs. We had participants from the middle east, who used Binance, Kraken, and the MVP product that Rain had pre-existing. Something that was worthy of note that I discovered during user research were elements of Middle eastern culture that was important to be aware of, Islamic financial values and the struggles some of the users had with competitor platforms around lack of support for some of the local currencies.

Translating the brand work into the product was a particularly important bit.

Rain’s color palette bucks the trend of typical trading platforms. Rather than being black or blue, the primary colors — Nightfall, Sand, and Sunglo — are a nod to the beautiful Middle Eastern skies. Rain’s gradient, in both light and dark mode, matches the movement of the sun.

Impact

Since launch, the product has seen a rise in not only it’s user numbers, but also in user advocates. More people feel proud to identify with the product, and invite friends to use the product by utilising the in-app referral mechanism I helped design.

Design System

Carrying on with work from the brand design phase, I worked with the rest of the team to set up a design system for the rain brand. With this fully featured design system that covers web, mobile and marketing applications, Rain's design team would find it easier to create new design work that is consistent with the design work I helped deliver.
